What a weekend! Lehigh Valley Composite teams, coaches and families headed to Blue Mountain where Middle and high School students raced in the first ever PICL race at Blue. This was a completely new course for us to explore. Blue Mountain is known for their downhill trails but this new XC course has a little bit for everyone to enjoy.

The week leading up to this event, some of our students and coaches assisted with trail work to get the course ready for a weekend of epic climbing, descending and spectator excitement on a short XC course that made for an ideal race course.

Saturday October 1st – Middle School Races

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, our middle school students were on course. Spectators lined the start and finish line but also found perfect viewing points right along the rooty and technical sections of the course. Bravo to all our students! Lili Shelton achieved 2nd place for 8th grade girls. Tessa Fix came in 6th place after a dropped chain mechanical issue at the very beginning of her race. Even though she lost a significant amount of time, she fought her way all the way back up into 6th place. Well done! Teague Hunner came in 5th place in the 7th grade boys category.

Sunday October 2nd – High School Races

Sunday morning started off cold and wet but this race day turned into a great competition for our High School student athletes!

First year Freshman Virginia Kraus, racing in 9th grade Female category, impressed with a steady pace, in a tight competition overtaking with first place winner around her third lap, ultimately completing her 5 lap race in second place. Congratulations!

Colin Winfield raced to the top and landed in 5th place in the 9th grade male category. Lincoln Clark, one of our Parkland top contenders in 9th grade category, took a season ending spill with injury to his hand in his first lap. Very sad to see his season end early. Dayna Hunner (10th grade) and Abby Lazewski (Senior) raced their way to the top 10 in JV2 female. Vivian Kirkpatrick raced her way to the top and landed in 6th place in JV3 female.

One notable feat; a great display of sportsmanship and dedication, was observed between Avery Daniels and Ozzie Vasquez. Now a senior, Avery is a returning student athlete who previously raced in his Freshman year. With both students racing in the JV2 category among nearly 200 students, Avery encountered a mechanical issue that could not be repaired on course. Ozzie decided to forfeit his last lap, swapped his bike with Avery who could then finish his race in 130th place with a 10 minute penalty applied. He never gave up and was determined to climb his way up through that finish line! Well done!
